All of my life, my father has been my role model. He was your typical (at that time) working class blue collar guy who loved sports and spending time with his family. He taught me many things, but a few things were left by the wayside. He taught me how to tie a tie and where to wear one. As I travel down fatherhood in this era, I find this information valuable, but knowing how to dress to be even more valuable. That's something that I lack in fathering traits.
Athletics has played a major role in my life from the age of 8 to roughly 26, and I had no need to dress other than the occasional wedding, funeral, or church event that requires a suit and tie and or a jacket. But as far as dressing for the everyday, I'm a jeans and T-Shirt guy or a joggers and gym shoe type of guy. It's been who I am for so long that I don't know what I look good in at all. I have been trying a few things, mainly more fitted clothing, but I have no idea of how I look. My wife loves the new pieces that she's suggested, but for me its all out of my comfort zone.
One of my biggest issues is knowing how to dress for my body type. I seem to be an "in-betweener" so to speak. I'm muscular but fat. I don't have a big belly, but I have some fat on my sides. My shoulders are very broad. When it comes to jackets and shirts in my size the arms, shoulders, and back are snug. Giving the illusion that the shirt is too small for me. To make matters a little more difficult, I have a large head (but I feel it's proportionate to my body). So, it's like trying to find something nice looking that's just fitted enough that it fits my arms and back, but not too fitted to where it looks like I have a "smedium" shirt on. Pants aren't so bad with the exception of my big behind and thighs. Other than that, I'm a winner when I clothes shop.
So, like any savvy person such as myself would do, I googled husky men's fashion, but before I hit the search button, I figured that there would be pictures of men like myself with Jeans and button down shirt or baggy clothing. Of course google gave me a large selection of big and tall models that were on the runway or posed on an urban canvas designed to sell clothing. After scrolling down, I decided that I'm better off looking at pictures on pinterest of husky men that would be more realistic for my palette. As soon as I hit the search button fathers, business professionals, working class, and entrepreneurs are had their own styles of dress. It was almost like looking at a buffet of examples. I couldn't determine which category or style that I would fit in.
The hard part wasn't determining what would look good on me but where to get those pieces. I play different roles and one type of look has never been something I've stuck to. Now, I will admit, I've always had a default look of Jeans and T-Shirt or Joggers and Jimmies, but to say exactly who I am with clothing has been something that I haven't been able to express clearly.
A few years back, the style was baggy clothing; white tees and blue jeans was all you needed (yeah, I'm telling my age), but now people have become more fashion conscious and I've been out of the loop for quite some time now. I see what I'd like to try, but haven't done it yet. The goal is to go shopping soon, but it hasn't happened yet. Don't have a clue of where to shop other than online, but that hasn't always gone well when it comes to clothing for me.
I know that I can't be the only one who's stood at the point of needing to figure out how to show the world who I am through my appearance...or am I? I'd love to hear your story on how you express yourself with clothes. Is there a brand that gets who you are? What's the best place to shop for a husky guy trying to revamp his closet and enhance the style that radiates out of him? What's your favorite outfit to where and why? Who taught you to be so stylish?
Enjoy yourself while you're riding the life train with me. You're definitely in for a treat.
