Me as Ursula, Queen Witch of the Sea
Something about having kids makes the holidays crazy! From Halloween to Christmas, these three months tend to be a blur. This year I was all to happy to take the DIY approach. Since William was three we stopped doing the traditional trick or treating and stuck to public themed events that had activities and candy for him to take home before enjoying movie night at home.
This time around I was feeling like the kids could really use some family fun time since it had been quite a while. I decided we were going to still do the same things: trunk-or-treat +move night, but a quick moment in the van with the kid through me for a lil loop. We were at one of the trunk-or -treat events like two days out about to get out and walk around when he saw all of the other kids already in costume and having fun. He was wearing a jacket and sweats.
At first he thought it was Halloween and I explained to him that it wasn't and maybe they just wanted to show each other what costumes they had. He got super sad then brought up to me that I told him that he couldn't have one when we were at the store a few days before. Which I did. Even though they weren't particularly too expensive per se, I just couldn't see myself spending that kind of money on a single wear item, when I was literally in the store to get winter items that he needed. I didn't take into account the position it would put him in later to feel so left out. I imagined it only being worse on the actual day.

We took a moment to explain to him how it's more important to have the things you need as opposed to the things you want. While it may feel some type of way, perhaps embarrassing at first, in the long run you're still winning. Then we let him decide if he still wanted to get some candy, that it was all for him and we'd support his decision. And you know something? The little guy stopped crying, wiped his tears, and decided to go for it. When it was all said and done he actually thanked us and said "See, I didn't even need a costume, guys. Sometimes you gotta just get what ya need." It literally made me silent cry. Not like a sob, like a G cry. For those who know what I'm talking about when I say a G cry, it need not be explained.
SO you know me. I went into Creative Mommy mode and set out to give the Big Guy the best extravaganza I could because, I mean seriously. What kid would've said that? It let me know he deserved it a way that was deeper than I thought. He needed some time to simply be a kid. So we celebrated all weeked; trunk or treats before Saturday, and a feast of a movie night complete with a viewing fort, renting new releases on FireStick. Then we wrapped it up on Halloween trick-or-treating the old fashion way, like I used to a as a kid, knocking on white people's doors hoping for full sized candy. It was great.
I SLAPPED together a red hoodie, jeans, a white shirt for him and knew I could face paint him as Miguel from the Disney movie CoCo. To take the costume to the next level I decided to make him a replica guitar out of a literal shoebox. (Deets on later post) I made the little up real quick and ripped up some orange material for a scarf to wear outside of her coat with some powdered weave braids to complete the look for Mama Coco's signature pigtails. He was so satisfied and grateful for everything. he was sure to thank us like only he could. We are so lucky to have such an awesome kid. I want to make a a quick vid on this guitar I am so proud of, but if i don't get the time to edit tonight since I'm king dinner, I'll post the raw footage in the a.m. while you wait. Hope you had a Safe and Happy Halloween!
